What type of air movement should you expect under those conditions?
Q. Conditions: If you are sitting on a beach on a warm summer day, you might see the bright sunlight striking the beach and the ocean near the shore. What type of air movement should you expect under those conditions? A. cooler air blowing from the ocean and pushing warm air over land and upward. B. movement back and forth equally between land and ocean. C. movement of air from the land out over the ocean. D. warmer air blowing from the ocean and pushing cool air over the land and upward.
Asked by Rayy.(: - Tue Jan 26 19:56:39 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The air over the ocean will be cooler and gaining mass since water is evaporating into it, so you will have a cool breeze heading into the land from the ocean, pushing the warmer air upward and perhaps causing precipitation.

will the air circulate better in a room if you open some windows at the top and others at the bottom?
Q. I'm trying to get better air circulation in my house to cut down on running the air conditioner. I recently opened one window in my bed room at the top instead of opening all at the bottom and seem to have better and more air circulation. is this true or is it just that these days happened to have more air flow than the days all windows were opened at the bottom? These are all such good answers, I hate to pick just one. Thank you all very much.
Asked by ADM - Fri Jun 25 08:38:06 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. well it creates crossdrafts that make it feel as if there are more breezes. also open the window only slightly. because of how close air molecules are when its hotter, when it comes through the window it has more room to spread out, therefore making the air inside much cooler. also hot air rises as cold air sinks so if it is really hot outside and you want it to be cooler, try opening up a window downstairs and keeping one upstairs only slightly open

Why does my central air in my house only blow cold air for about an hour?
Q. When I turn on my central air, I am only getting cold air weakly through the vents for about any hour. After that, you cannot feel the air even though the air conditioning unit is still running. What causes this? I ran it last night and looked at the coils once the air stopped coming through the vents and they had frost on them. I couldn't tell if there was something blocking the air flow, so does this mean I am low on freon?
Asked by Building - Tue Jun 15 09:09:44 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It sounds like the coil is freezing up, caused by extremely dirty coils, a freon leak, or some sort of air flow restriction.. Here is a couple links for homeowner maintenance Clean dirty coils- Cleaning AC drain line. Repair damaged duct.. General AC maintenance.

Do air flow induction kits for cars really make a difference? Is it worth changing them?
Q. I am due for a service so will be changing my air filter as part of the service. The air filter is the standard audi a3 air filter. Someone suggested getting a K&N Induction kit or a pipercross induction kit but are they really worth it? Do they actually make a difference to the cars performance? Got a full performance exhaust fitted. Scorpian system and new cat.
Asked by SolidStateLogic - Fri Nov 2 19:09:01 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The trouble with induction kits is they are great on the race track but for normal driving they suck hot air from under the bonnet, especially when stuck in traffic. I had trouble with a bit of pinking with one of my cars, and was told by a tune up engineer that i would be far better of with something like a K&N replacement panel filter, as it utilizes the cars original induction system which after the millions of pounds of development they have invested would be more than fine. Unless you do high revving driving all over the place a replacement panel filter will do just the job, you just would not really notice the difference between them. And by the way i have spent more money on this stuff than i care to think of.

What is the best way to circulate air from a window air conditioner to multiple rooms in the house?
Q. I have a window air conditioner (8000btu) which does a great job of cooling my living room, unfortunately, the cooler air stays in just the living room, so the bedroom is still hot. I have 2 fans to help move the air. I also have a ceiling fan in the bedroom, but, it seems the bedroom is always FAR warmer than the living room. I'm wondering the best way to position the fans to get maximum cooling effect in the bedroom. The living room is essentially a square -- on one side of the square - in the middle - is the window with the AC.. oppisite the AC is the hallway which leads to the bedroom. Would I be better off putting a fan at the entrance to the hallway blowing the air out of the living room, and down the hallway? or put it in the… [cont.]
Asked by Tim - Mon Jul 9 16:10:13 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, cold air falls and heat rises, so definately keep the fans on the floor. Place one fairly close to the air cond. on a chair and position toward the hall. Then put another one from the end of the hall pointed into your room. And I would put yet another in the doorway of your room pointed to the bed. Nix the fan in the bedroom window, it's too hot and it will only let out the cool air from your a/c. :)

How does the fresh air damper feature of a thermostat work?
Q. I have a thermostat in my home with a fresh air feature that brings in air from the outside based on the outside temperature. How does it determine what temperature to use when opening the fresh air damper? How long does it stay open? How does the fresh air damper differential setting affect the fresh air damper function? The manual that came with the thermostat was of little to no help on this. Nope, didn't steal it. I bought a new home that came with it. Just trying to figure out how it works.
Asked by SS - Mon Aug 18 01:36:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's commonly called an economizer. When the temperature outside is cooler than the set point of the thermostat it will open the damper to assist your AC unit and save energy. It's most commonly used in commercial operations that require air conditioning inside even when it's 50 or below outside. Just because you bought a thermostat with that feature doesn't mean your system is designed for it. Or did you actually take the thermostat from work?

How good can air purifiers be in regards to toxins?
Q. How good can air purifiers be in regards to toxins? For example, if I accidentally burn a few pounds worth of plastics, accidentally release some Clorine gas, and accidentally mix two dangerous chemicals, and cause massive amounts of super toxic gasses and chemicals to be released, is there any air purifier that, regardless of how toxic the toxins are, or what they are, will clean the air to the point of being safe to re-enter this hypothetical air tight room?
Asked by magic - Sun Dec 13 20:25:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're going to need an air purifier with massive, massive, massive amounts of carbon running at very high fan speed. While there are several media within air purifiers for various needs, only carbon will absorb the kinds of smoke and gasses you are talking about. I don't know who the joker is above this post or what he's trying to sell, but I've never heard of the air purifier he's recommending. The air purifier with the most amount of carbon lies in the Allerair line that you can can read about here: Having said that, I'm not sure anything but professional cleaning would make the kind of room you're talking about safe.

Can an air conditioner leak create enough water to flood part of a basement?
Q. I have water in my basement. I am trying to determine the source. Two possibilites: my foundation or my piping coming from my air conditioner. I have a theory that there may be a leak in the piping coming from the air conditioning unit causing water in the basement. I do not have a lot, probably about two gallons every day. Is it possible it is coming from my air conditioner?
Asked by schneiderbs - Sat Jul 12 18:19:58 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. your air conditioner can produce 2 gal. a day but i don't think it's your problem. if it is, then it should be an easy fix. the ac part that produces condensation is located outside your home, called the condenser. now maybe that's leaking back into your basement. if so, buy some flexible tubing and re-route the drain line away from your house. find your condenser and see if excess water is present. ps. 2 gallons is a lot! pss, does this happen in the winter time? if so, then it's not your ac.

What is causing air conditioning unit to blow out warm air and make a loud humming noise?
Q. I am hoping that we can avoid the expense of a service repair person. The filters are changed monthly. The air will come in absolutely freezing cold. Then it shuts down and blows in very warm air for hours. We shut it down for about an hour, then when we restarted it, it blew in hot warm air making a loud humming. The humming stopped, then very cold hair started to come in for about half an hour. I am wondering is this something that we can correct ourselves.

What will happen if an air-to-air missile flies over its maximum flight ceiling?
Q. For example, an air-to-air missile has a maximum flight/service ceiling of 66,000 ft. What will happen if the air-to-air missile flies above 66,000 ft? I am asking, what will happen to the missile if it ever goes above its maximum flight ceiling. What will happen to it? The scenario is that the missile goes above its flight ceiling.
Asked by unknown - Wed Jun 23 01:31:58 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. By definition, a missile cannot fly above its ceiling. The ceiling is the altitude above which it cannot fly. So a missile with a ceiling of 66,000 feet will never get above 66,000 feet. If it could do that, then 66,000 feet would not be its ceiling.

How can I improve air quality / circulation in my bedroom?
Q. I have a window air conditioner unit (so my window cannot open, meaning I don't get much fresh air in my room). My room also tends to be a bit on the dusty side. How can I get some good air circulation or better air quality in my room in order to improve my sleep and schoolwork productivity?
Asked by JV - Sat Apr 5 20:42:50 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Is there filter in the unit? Should be about a 1/4" thick piece of foam stuff. If no, get one and clean it every so often. The average hardware should have some. While you are looking for the filter, get a spray bottle and mix up a weak vinegar solution. Spray it on the inside coils liberally to rinse the coils clean. You can rinse it with straight water or let it self-rinse while operating. There may be a vent option on the unit. They will have different ways of labeling it on the unit, but essentially it opens a vent to the outside and sucks a small amount of fresh air into the unit when it operates. Go outside and hose off the coils with a garden hose. Don't spray too hard and bend the fins. You can use a liquid cleaner (Winde [cont.]

What is the relationship between chnages in air pressure and tempertaure?
Q. Air pressure decreases with an increase in altitude. This happens because air pressure is determined by the weight of the overlying air. Consequently, air rising upward experinces lower pressure and expands. What must happen to the temperature of air rising through the atmosphere? What happens to the temperature of air when it moves downward in the atmosphere?
Asked by Kerri L B - Wed Jul 11 23:10:00 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In general the temperature of the air parcel falls as it rises into the atmosphere and rises as it falls in the atmosphere. However, inversions are stable areas in the atmosphere where the temperature is often greater than the layer below it. The tropopause is an excellent example of this. In inversions, the parcel of air can mix with this air mass to give variations in the statement above.

Asked by Connie - Mon Apr 12 20:10:53 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An air washer is an air cleaner/purifier but an air cleaner is not an air washer. And air cleaner purifies the air from airborne contaminants. Ad air washer washes, humidifies and ionizes the air. If I were in the market for this I would be looking at the air washer. One, because there is no filters. Two, because it maintains humidity. And three, I think it better overall .personal opinion

The unit has the two modes, air conditioner mode and fan mode. It seems to have a control for three speeds, high, medium and low. Then there is a control to make two blades glide back and forth. What causes air conditioner to stop blowing air fast?
Q. My air conditioner used to blow air fast, now it is very low. I can barely feel the air coming out of the vent. A few weeks ago the air froze and we had freon put it in, but it still blows air very slowly and it stays warm and humid in the house. The vents feel cold to touch, but its not cooling the house enough. Even the room closest to the unit isn't very cool. Living in the deep south it is very hot and very humid. Please help!
Asked by Lindsey B - Tue Aug 11 09:57:55 2009 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There is an airflow restriction in your system. Some causes are blocked air inlet for the return air, too high a density filter, slow blower speed or incorrect rotation, dirty indoor coil, dirty filter, loose insulation in the ducts or near the blower. Also, a low charge of refrigerant, the metering device is restricted, the filter/drier is restricted. Also, could be a weak blower motor capacitor, or motor bearings are seizing.

A. If you can meet the standards to be an air force pilot, why not do it for awhile? You can always leave when the airlines are profitable again...but who knows when that will be. They are not going to be hiring for quite some time, nor will you make money as an airline pilot.

How fast could a compressed air dragster go?
Q. There have been several stories on TV and the Internet about compressed air cars. The compressed air drive system is supposed to be simpler and lighter weight than a gas engine. The fuel source is also just compressed air in a light weight tank. Light weight cars with a large amounts power is what wins races. Therefore, how fast could a compressed air dragster go in a quarter mile? I won't believe in this technology until I see it win some races.
