Bulgaria (pronounced /bʌlˈɡɛəriə/ ( listen) Bulgarian: България, transliterated: Bulgaria, pronounced [bɤ̞lˈɡarijɐ]), officially the Republic of Bulgaria (Република България, transliterated: Republika Bulgaria, [rɛˈpublikɐ bɤ̞lˈɡarijɐ]), is a country in south-eastern Europe. Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the River Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east.

With a territory of 110,994 square kilometers, Bulgaria ranks as the 16th-largest country in Europe. Several mountainous areas define the landscape, most notably the Stara Planina (Balkan) and Rodopi mountain ranges, as well as the Rila range, which includes the highest peak in the Balkan region, Musala. In contrast, the Danubian plain in the north and the Upper Thracian Plain in the south represent Bulgaria's lowest and most fertile regions. The 378-kilometer Black Sea coastline covers the entire eastern bound of the country. Bulgaria's capital city and largest settlement is Sofia, with a permanent population of 1,405,000 people.

The emergence of a unified Bulgarian national identity and state dates back to the 7th century AD. All Bulgarian political entities that subsequently emerged preserved the traditions (in ethnic name, language and alphabet) of the First Bulgarian Empire (681 – 1018), which at times covered most of the Balkans and eventually became a cultural hub for the Slavs in the Middle Ages. With the decline of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185 – 1396/1422), Bulgarian territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 led to the establishment of a Third Bulgarian state as a principality in 1878, which gained its full sovereignty in 1908. In 1945, after World War II, it became a communist state and was a part of the Eastern Bloc until the political changes in Eastern Europe in 1989/1990, when the Communist Party allowed multi-party elections and Bulgaria undertook a transition to parliamentary democracy and free-market capitalism.

Bulgaria functions as a parliamentary democracy within a unitary constitutional republic. A member of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, it has a high Human Development Index of 0.840, ranking 61st in the world in 2009.

How much money to spend on food if I stay for 30 days in Bulgaria?
Q. Hey everyone, Just wanted to ask some travellers how much money is required to spend entirely on food if staying for 30 days in Bulgaria for a single person (I am going to live in the city of Sofia). Are there any recommendations for relatively cheap restaurants and cafe's in Sofia? Is it true that american dollars are more popular than a national bulgarian currency? Any help appreciated

A. In Sofia things are pretty expensive by Bulgarian standards, but even so, 10 euro per day should feed you, and allow for a glass of local wine. The cuisine can be rather "heavy", and meat rich, but is usually very tasty. They cook pork (svinsko) paticularly well, and serve some variation on yoghurt (which they claim to have invented) with many dishes. It is always worth asking if the dish you have ordered will be served with a side dish (garnitura), as this will almost invariably be charged seperately, as will bread. A visit to fascinating and renovated Halite food market will enable you to stretch your budget. The local currency is fixed rigidly at about 1.95 lev to the euro, and there is no preference for dollars.

Does anyone out there know the tone of someone from Bulgaria as opposed to someone from Ghana?
Q. Have been speaking with someone never seen on the tele saying they are from Bulgaria/Britain but they sound just like someone from Africa. How can you know if you are speaking to a Bulgarian or an African?

A. The two accents are very very different Bulgarians have a thick Slavic accents when they speak English. They sound like they are Russian. Here's the Harry Potter actor Stanislav Ianevski from Bulgaria Lots of Bulgarians can't say Ws, they say it like V. So ask them to say Washington and they say Vashington, or we will becomes ve vill like with Russians. I have Bulgarian neighbours in my building and I thought they were Russian for the longest time because they sound like Russians. It's a very different accent from Ghanaian. Most Ghanaians sound like Kofi Annan from the UN. Or if a woman here is our current Miss Ghana You could always suggest a Skype videochat so you see the person. There are very few white people in Ghana and very… [cont.]
