I'm going to be going all through Central and maybe a bit of South America, and I'm wondering what would be the best way for carrying all my money. There's cash, travelers cheques, bank card, etc. Are travelers cheques easily cashable? How much of a fee would there be on them? I just don't want to carry a wad of cash around in my pocket. Of the majors, only Discover charge does not charge a fee for currency exchange or purchases and cash abroad. Of course you pay the exchange rate and the banks may charge a fee. Most cards can get cash in ATMs but again the local bank may get a service fee. Use the card directly for purchases. You should carry a small amount of cash and travelers checks but not much. You can always use the credit card to get more travelers check while in Central America, buy as you go along.
