Is it possible to become a guidance counselor without a Masters?
Q. I have a Bachelor's in Psychology and have had 4 years experience in the pscyhology field. (about a year and a half working as a drug and alcohol counselor and HIV counselor. abuot 2 1/2 years as a TSS working with autistic and mentally challenged youth) I was wondering if it was necessary to have a masters to be able to get a job as a high school guidance counselor.

A. Most school counselling jobs require a Master's degree and licensure. There are even specific degrees in guidance counselling as well now which also require a license.

Is there anyway to override guidance approval?
Q. I was planning to do summer classes online at FLVS, so I can get more credits and take more classes that I like. I was planning to take about three classes over the summer, so I can do higher level AP courses in my school. But the only problem is that my guidance counselor won't let me take anything, he won't approve anything nor is he allowing me to take any course over the summer. Is there anyway to take online classes without school guidance approval? Or is there any possible way I can take classes online over the summer?

A. If you're a high school student and you need special permission to be allowed to take more classes, there is no way to override guidance approval if needed. What I would do is arrange a meeting with your counselor to see why he won't give you permission and talk with your parents about the situation. If your parents agree that you would benefit from having these classes, and you have the time to devote to them, talk to your counselor. If that fails, and you're still convinced you need the classes, speak with his supervisor.

What major do I need to be a guidance counselor?
Q. What major do I need to be a guidance counselor? Not a social worker but I guidance. I just want to mainly work in scheduling and college prep for high schoolers.

A. i think that probably the most desired major for potential guidance counselors to have would be psychology or education. perhaps a major in psych and a minor in some educational field your school offers? or vice versa? i think those are the two main majors that a guidance counselor should really be versed in.
