How old is my whisky bottle/box and how little is it actually worth?
Q. My husband was recently given a bottle of Ambassador 25yr Scotch Whisky, 4/5 qt. size. We know it was imported between 1945 and 1950, thanks to tax stamps, but nothing beyond that, so a more exact date would be great if possible. I can send photos. The bottle itself is still sealed with a lead seal from Bloch Brothers (Distillers) Ltd. - the seal reads "Bloch's Whisky" - and the IRS distilled spirits import tax stamp (Series III, which dates it to 1945-) is still intact. There is also a Texas State Tax stamp on it that sold for 25.6 cents (dates it between 1945 and 1950). I know the whisky itself is worth little, because whisky doesn't age after it is bottled, but my question is: is the bottle itself worth anything? We also have the… [cont.]

A. Ambassador-25 year-old Blended and bottled by Bloch Brothers (Distillers) Ltd., Glasgow. Distilleries, Glen Scotia, Argyll, Scapa, Kirkwall. Imported by Quality Imports Inc. New York. Stopper cork, embossed lead capsule. Level: lower shoulder 1 bottle 120-140.NS One dollar US = l.5 UKL so around $100 I've seen them advertised on the whiskey merchant sites at around $75 or so.

Q. Johnnie Walker Black Label is the most awarded scotch whisky in the world, but what is the scotch single malt with the most awards? Thanks fixguy - i agree that taste is individual (Im from scotland, so i know).. but i'm after these statistics for a specific piece of research im doing. How can I make my own whisky?
Q. My friend and I have gotten interested in making our own whisky as a hobby. I was wondering if there are any good books, groups of hobbyist distillers and infromative sites around... Personal experiences are most welcome.
Asked by Reza - Thu Jul 5 20:38:30 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will need a license if you are going to make more that a small amount. The ATF doesn't take kindly to moonshiners. AND... making a small amount of whiskey is not a good idea. To get the flavor associated with whiskey, it has to be aged in oak barrels. Unless you can find someone who will make tiny little oak barrels for you, you are better off just going to the liquor store.

Q. I buyed a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky, and a bottle of Johnny Walker Red Label scotch-whisky and I wondered what are the temperatures they tastes the best, because I know that some alcohols are best drinked at room's temperature, or even warm (sake can be drinked either cold or warm).

A. Without wishing to sound rude, you sound like a novice in the Whiskey/Whisky stakes .. if you're drinking American Whiskey .. it's best sipped at room temperature .. hence the nickname 'sipping whiskey' .. you mentioned JW (which I personally find the worst in the world) try drinking it with ice and Coke or Pepsi, it goes a long way to disguising its disgusting oily taste . now for REAL whisky try a single malt, icy cold, no ice, no water just put the glass of nectar in the freezer for several hours and then crack through he surface ice (it's the water they use to dilute at the distillery) and drink the pure nectar of the gods that is underneath .. not sure where you live but look for a GOOD Single Malt, such as Longmorn, Glendronach, Caol… [cont.]

What influence do foreshots and feints have on the taste of single malt whisky?
Q. When distilling a single malt whisky, some of the foreshots or feints may get into the 'heart', the part of the whisky that is actually used. I want to know what flavour characteristics these will give to the finished single malt.
Asked by mafstew - Wed Mar 11 09:12:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Foreshots are the first fraction of the distillation process that comes off the still. The foreshots are not collected because they contain all the extremely volatile components which are toxic and sometimes poisonous. Then the second part of the process is the Heart of the run which is collected. Feints (aftershots) the third fraction of the distillation process are also removed from the run. Both the foreshots and feints are recycled back into the next run.

what is the difference between blended and premium Chivas whisky?
Q. i've got 2 bottles of Chivas Regal, one says Blended Scotch Whisky and the other Premium Scotch Whisky. what's the difference?
Asked by jade2a6 - Wed Feb 18 09:16:50 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Blended scotches are scotches that have been combined from different barrel years to achieve a particular consistent taste. Premium scotch in this case is one that is barrel aged and can stand on it's own without the process. Cutty Sark, Chivas, Cluny, McCallen, Johnny Walker Red are examples of blended scotches.

What is in Jack Daniel's Whisky in addition to the alcohol?
Q. OK, so pure alcohol is 200 proof or 100%. If Jack Daniel's Whisky is only 80 proof or 40% alcohol, what is in it besides the alcohol?
Asked by mrpentax - Thu Sep 17 20:43:35 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Water is the primary "other" ingredient, and, in most cases, they actually do distill it to a higher proof, then blend it and add water to bring the proof-age to exactly 80 or whatever it is. It is actually quite difficult to distill alcohol at exactly 80 proof. The quality of the water has a great deal to do with the quality of the booze which is one reason why quality booze comes from certain places. It is then aged in oak barrels, sometimes for 20 or more years. The oak adds some tannin content and flavor compounds like vanillin, but these only comprise .001% or something like that of the volume. After aging it is usually blended; this ensures a consistent product. Single barrel bourbons are just that, unblended. A little more care… [cont.]

A. This stuff is quite expensive, even when new, so try and keep hold of it, especially if it's old. You may develop a taste for the stuff, and it would be a shame to have let it go. It keeps for years unless you drink it.
